ACCEPTANCE OF CONDOM USE AMONG STUDENT CALLERS
OF THE REMEDIOS AIDS HOTLINE IN METRO MANILA, PHILIPPINES

OBJECTIVE:

To determine if student callers of the Remedios AIDS Hotline accept condom use as an option in the prevention of HIV infection.

METHODS:

Recorded and summarized data from the hotline call report were used from January-December 1993. Callers included were high school and college students in Metro Manila.

RESULTS:

From the data gathered, 84 % of the callers with risk exposures did not use condoms because of the following reasons: there exists a lack of knowledge of its importance in preventing HIV infection, decreased pleasure and sensitivity, perceived knowledge of sexual partner, unavailability of condoms and being under the influence of alcohol.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:

The result suggest that educators must develop and implement preventive actions, interventions and educational programs for the students in order to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
