A PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF VOLUNTEERS
WORKING FOR PREVENTION IN A NON-GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the psychological qualities of qualified
volunteers for counseling, support group, advocacy and other AIDS-related work
in a non-government organization.
METHOD:
A standardized temperament survey by Guuilford-Zimmerman was
given to 94 respondents who applied as volunteers in a non-government
organization.
RESULTS:
The study showed that in general both male/female volunteers
have high-average scores on the following : General Activity/Energy
(xbar=20.29), Restraint/Seriousness (xbar=18.13) Social
Interest/Sociability (xbar=24.07), Emotional Stability (xbar=21.68),
Thoughtfulness/Reflectiveness (xbar=20.20); while on the other hand they scored on the
middle average on Objectivity (xbar=19.48) and in Personal
Relations/Cooperativeness (xbar=17.61). While an above average mean score showed along
the scale on Ascendance/Social Boldness (xbar=22) for male and xbar=21
for female). It surpassed all other scales in this particular study.
Friendliness scale for Male/Female volunteer's mean average is
categorized on the middle average. Female scores are more on the masculinity side
while male scores are more on the femininity side.
CONCLUSIONS:
In a non-government organization where volunteerism is an
important arm for the implementation of programs, volunteers with
average to above psychological qualities are needed. This is because
volunteerism especially in HIV/AIDS work requires not only in communication
and interrelating with people but in-depth understanding of the issues
and problems involved. It is encouraged that psychological tests such as
the one used in this study be adapted. Regardless of sexual
orientation, Remedios AIDS Foundation has not discriminated volunteer applicants.
